Extinctions

No managing of myths
can make them solely female.
They pair, they split, they
couple as elements do in
the fury of nuclear fusion.
Their bad name made scavenger,
forgot their culling of herds
or the consciousness
as movement out of endangered
territories.  A hundred and twenty-five
miles in a few days.  We mark
highways with less magnitude.
Down from the north
where the hole through
the middle of the earth
carries our ideas
of 19th-century ocean currents,
they pass through, Gray wolf
to Arctic, Red wolf
to Mexico, barely disturbed
except by the mingling
of our extinctions.
