Second Life on Dragonback:
A Slideshow of Travel in Strange Lands
Daniel Fusch
For the unitiated, Second Life is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer
Online Roleplaying Game) or virtual world invented a few years ago by the
Linden Corporation. It is a 3D environment in which users can walk about with
virtual representations of themselves ("avatars"), interact, found online
corporations, hold classes, hold political elections, fly, make love, rent online
real estate, and create virtual fairytale worlds. This correspondent traveled the
wilds of Second Life recently in search of those worlds. As children, how many
of us created imaginary lands, populated them with characters and bizarre
creatures? As a child I led my siblings as explorers through the backwoods
behind our farm, which in a few sentences we could transform into a magical
world populated by giant, carnivorous birds and invisible samurai warriors. This
slideshow is a testament to the creativity and mythic imagination of gradeschool
teachers, corporate executives, carpenters, and teenagers all around the world
who have brought their imaginary places to virtual life.
